Haven

We know that extreme heatwaves are a Silent Killer, killing more people than bushfires, cyclones and floods.

It’s been a local grassroots group SHASA that has acted swiftly after the Spring/Summer 2019-2020 Fires to create heat and storm havens in our Eurobodalla community.

In the 3CR podcast SHASA’s Kathryn Maxwell speaks about the retrofitting of buildings in Eurobodalla, and equipping them to become heat wave and storm havens.

Kathryn also talks about the social justice issues raised by the roll out of cheap to run, but expensive to buy electric vehicles. She calls for a cash for clunkers programme in a few years to let low income earners enjoy the cost cutting benefits of electric vehicles.

Kathryn raises the need to subsidize simple ways of making rental housing warmer in winter, to improve the health of tenants.

Once again we’re reminded of what a social justice issue climate change is!

Have a listen to this inspiring 3cr Earth Matters Podcast – ‘Bush fire, heat wave and storm havens. Creating safety for all‘ to learn more about this great Eurobodalla project.

When we are parched by heatwaves, fires rage and smoke clogs the air we all want to be safe.

The South Coast Health and Sustainability Alliance in Moruya has retrofitted an old church to be a bush fire, heat wave and storm haven for vulnerable people. It’s also a repair café fixing items for reuse and is putting solar panels on rooves. “
