Through a child’s eyes

Photography – Jesse Scifleet, 2019

Photograph taken by Jesse Scifleet – aged 11 years – shot out the window of the family car while evacuating from Lilli Pilli to the township of Moruya on New Year’s Eve, day, 2019.

Save Our Climate : an urgent SOS graffitied onto the pylons of the Moruya River Bridge. And a message writ large into a glowering daytime sky, inscribed onto the shrouds of smoke and bruised black plumes that threaten to swallow Eurobodalla shire as Black Summer comes to town.

Jesse’s older brother, captures the rapidly changing sky and conditions, as seen from South Head rd, Moruya on NYE day, 2019

Mobile footage shot from South Head road, Moruya. The footage gives a view looking across the river to the north. Witnessing the scale and type of smoke, Jesse’s brother was uncertain whether his place – or Jesse’s home – had gone up. Both homes survived, whilst so many other properties and buildings in Eurobodalla were lost or damaged by the Clyde Mountain fire on NY Eve 2019.
