Here’s a comparison in screenshots of all recorded fires listed for the Deua Valley, gleaned from SEED, the Central Resource for Sharing and Enabling Environmental data in NSW.

You can move the slideshow back and forth by using the arrows to compare the size and location of historical fires with Black Summer in the Deua and surrounds.

Here’s some TIPS for viewing NPWS’s National Parks and Wildlife Service mapping of historical fire data sets for Eurobodalla

  • Scroll and Zoom into Eurobodalla on the map using the + and – tools and your mouse pointer, and you will be able to see the overlays of historical fire data.
  • Click on a geographical area on the map, so that the margins and label for each fire, show up.
  • The Label field (on the left hand side of the map) will also give you the fire’s name and the area burnt. It will allow you to scroll back and forth between other fires recorded in this area.

To get an essential account by Former Fire Commissioner, Greg Mullins AO on the drivers and distinguishing features of Black Summer – it size, intensity, rate of spread and the relentless number of fire warning days, be sure to drop in on WOOEE’s Giga fire page, where we link to the Climate Council’s excellent webinar ‘Firestorm: In Conversation with Greg Mullins and Kerry O’Brien.’ Click here

2019 was the hottest driest year ever recorded in Australia. And Black Summer was the longest fires season recorded in NSW running from July 2019 to March 2020.

11 times more homes were lost in NSW during Black Summer, than any other summer.
